12.1.19 Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and were able to take time with your families.
This week we will be wrapping our first trimester, we will be finishing our History Unit comparing how life was “long ago” to how life is now. I very much enjoyed hearing what your children learned; it even brought back some good memories! We have a couple more students who need to present tomorrow.
We will also be finishing our Math unit in which we learned some strategies to add and subtract numbers to twenty. Many of us are getting quite secure with our addition and subtraction facts, using our strategies as opposed to counting on our fingers. If your child is still struggling, please be sure to continue not only quizzing him/her, but also talk to them about strategies they can use to solve the problems quickly. Some of the strategies we use are:
Please let me know if you would like to know more about any of these strategies.
Last week we finished up Unit 2 in reading, during we read a lot of non-fiction pieces about animals, looking for main idea and details. We will be starting Unit 3, in which we will be exploring ways to learn about the world around us.
HOMEWORK: Don’t forget special Thanksgiving homework is due tomorrow.
I am attaching spelling words for this week (high frequency words: good, often, two), so that your child can be prepared for the test on Thursday. Please encourage your child to study at least 3 times between now and then. I will send the homework sheet home tomorrow (or Tuesday) and it will be due on Thursday. (I realize that there will only be 2 or 3 days your child will have the homework sheet, but you can count what your child read Friday, yesterday, today and Monday).
Math homework is excused this week, although I would encourage your child to continue studying facts, especially if he/she is still having difficult time remembering them. Starting Thursday, math homework will look different. It will be a choice of conversations about what we are studying in math. More to come next week.
Once again, don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

Some of the strategies we use are:
- doubles,
- combinations of ten,
- near doubles,
- making ten,
- the turnaround rule,
- thinking addition to subtract (using fact families),
- counting up and back,
- going up through 10
- going back through 10.
