11.26.2017: I hope you found some time to relax and enjoy your children over this Thanksgiving weekend.
I am looking forward to the next 4 weeks of school. The only foreseen interruption is our Professional Development Day on December 8, when students will have the day off.
For many of you, your child has already shared my “new” expectation of our assignment books. For those who need clarification here it is: I have asked students to initial the “done” box for each assignment given, as a way to show me they have finished their homework every night. I am also asking you, as the parents to continue to sign the assignment book as well. Please feel free to add notes for reasons your child may have not completed the assignments or if you have questions. I told students that, starting 3rd quarter, they will not need parent signatures IF homework is being done (including their initials and parent signatures) on a regular basis.
New Thursday Folders will be coming home this Thursday. Please review them with your child and sign the cover sheet. Please encourage your child to fix or complete ONLY the work with a note from me. (It may say “Please fix” or “You may finish for more credit”). I have been spending a lot of time re-correcting work that doesn’t really show a deeper understanding of the concepts. If you go over work and feel your child has a better understanding of the concept, feel free to send in the corrected work with a note (written by you or your child) explaining what was learned. Looking at papers and discussing what mistakes were made, WHY they were made (worked too fast, needed to ask a question, still really doesn’t understand the concept) and how your child can do better the next time I an effective way to use the Thursday Folder.
As promised before the Thanksgiving Holiday, your child will be introduced to and bringing home their first project tomorrow (Monday). It is due on Tuesday, December 12. Please help your child with planning and time management as best you can. Students may bring home notes they have taken during class at any time, however it will be VERY important for them to bring them back to school each day. I have also posted the project expectations and rubric on the “Homework” page. Please encourage your child to use it to help them get the most of the project.
