Habit Building Homework
The purpose of this homework is to build life-long habits. Studies have shown both reading is beneficial to both academic and personal growth. I personally read most days and find that it is not only helpful to me, but I enjoy it. I hope as the year progresses students come to enjoy these activities and see them less as homework and more as something they enjoy doing.
The purpose of this homework is to automate skills that allow your children to focus on more complex areas of curriculum. This homework does not have to be formal. It can be done in the car on your way somewhere, it can be done as a game, or it can be done while you are waiting in line or for an appointment.

“Overtime”
The purpose of this homework is to complete work that we do not have time to complete during the school day. More and more jobs today require workers to work “overtime” or to bring work home. This homework is not given every night and it will be given to students at least 3-4 days before it is due. It is my hope that this homework will not only help to build your child’s academic abilities, but also develop time management skills, work ethic and independence.
Most Thursdays your child will bring home what we call the “Thursday Folder”. In this folder will be work from the previous week, corrected by me and reviewed by your child. Please take time to look through it with your child and sign it by the following Tuesday. If there is highlighted work (without a correct mark over the highlight), please encourage your child to fix/finish it and bring it back. If work is not highlighted please keep it home.
(Please note that daily homework should not take longer than 15 – 20 minutes. If your second grader chooses to work longer, then that is great. However, if they have put forth a good effort, and still have not finished after 15- 20 minutes, please write us a note, so that we can practice those skills in class.)

- Read for at least 20 minutes 5 - 7 days a week (Please be sure to fill out the reading log each day and bring it on Friday)
- Have conversations about things we are learning. Please take time to discuss work in the Thursday folders. Discuss the skills that were being practiced, what your child can learn from any mistakes that were made, and whether or not more practice is needed. Please let me know if you and your child are not able to answer any of these questions, so I can help.

- Study spelling words that come home each Monday. A sheet will come home with ideas of ways to study. Please be sure to study at least 3 times each week and mark how your child studied.
- Study addition facts. We would like your child to be able to solve them in a matter of 2 – 3 seconds each. This allows them to use most of their brain power for the more complex mathematical concepts. A sheet will come home with ideas of ways to study. Please be sure to study at least 3 times each week and mark how your child studied.

- Math Practice sheets. This will offer some extra practice to solidify mathematical skills. Feel free to help your child if needed, but please make note of how you help him/her.
- Projects (These come in different sizes and are assigned giving students plenty of time to do what they need to do.)
