Last Week! June 8 - 11
***No Calendar this week.****
What are you expecting this week?
I would like for your child to take some time and work on the Memory Book I mailed to them a few weeks ago. It is important to take time to remember the good times we had, before we went into remote learning and while we were remote learning.
I have posted a couple of optional assignments for those who would like to do them: One is a Math Mystery which should take a couple of days to solve and then both Monday morning and Tuesday morning STEM activities will be posted as well (Building a Bird House (on Monday) and a Experimenting with a Sun Dial (on Tuesday)). These are truly optional.
Don't forget:
Tuesday, Ms. Ballou will be telling us about summer reading at 10:00 (zoom invitation will go out Tuesday Morning)
Drop Everything and Read between 1 and 2 (or an hour that works better for you).
Wednesday: Our Virtual Field Day. Item list will be emailed on Monday, link will be sent Wednesday.
Thursday: Last Day of School and last Zoom at 10:00.

What Should My Child be Learning this Week?
Our goal this week is to wrap up our studies. I will be counting on you as parents to make the judgments as to how much work needs to be done. I would love for your child’s habitat book and poster to be something worth keeping so that he/she can look back on this second grade project with pride.
Reading: This week, your child will be comparing the Fresh water and Ocean habitats using the information he/she will read.. Your child will be able to explore a couple of water biomes through reading PDF articles as well as reading articles on Pebblego,(PebbleGo!– online encyclopedia, simpler text Username: newboston Password: school) Worldbook on line (World Book Online– online encyclopedia Username: nbcs Password: bobcat) and Factcite. (FactCite– online database (Biographies, Mythology, American History, Science, Countries and Culture) username: nbcs password: bobcat) ***User names and passwords are on my website under Remote Learning Resourses/Approved Websites, Logins (Please let me know if you need PDFs of these articles, but it would be great research practice for your child to actually go on line to research).
Phonics: We will incorporate our phonics skills by sounding out words to read and spell.
Grammar: We will incorporate our grammar in our writing, being sure to include complete sentences, as well as adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more clear. We will also be doing some more “mad libs” to practice identifying parts of speech. I am hoping this is a fun activity as opposed to “just one more thing to do”.
Writing: This week we will take time to finish writing facts in our habitat book. For those who were not able to get to the extra pages, you will get some time this week to complete them.
Math: We are continuing our study of fractions. The purpose of this unit is to introduce fractions so that students start to really get the idea that fractions are EQUAL parts of a whole. I want our students to understand that the parts of a fraction are equal and to start to play with some of the ideas around that. This is really meant to be fun and not stressful. (Please email if this is becoming stressful)
Science/Social Studies: As we study biomes, we are really learning about science (plants/animals/adaptations), as well as social studies (geography). We will also be integrating our reading, writing, as well as math at times. We want students to build an awareness that the world has many different places with different kinds of animals and plant life.

Week 10: May 18 - may 22
What Should My Child be Learning this Week?
This week we are shifting away from requiring Reading in Wonders in order to give your child more time to read about and research about habitats in which animals and plants live, also known as biomes. We WILL continue to use Wonders for our Grammar, Phonics and Sight word practice.
Reading: This week, your child will be comparing the grassland and desert biomes using the information he/she read and watched during the last couple of weeks. We will also start exploring the Tundra/Arctic Biome through reading PDF articles as well as reading articles on Pebblego,(PebbleGo!– online encyclopedia, simpler text Username: newboston Password: school) Worldbook on line (World Book Online– online encyclopedia Username: nbcs Password: bobcat) and Factcite.
Phonics: We are focusing on words with vowel team (ay, oo, oy, ea) syllables.
Grammar: We are learning about adverbs and prepositional phrases (words that tell us how, where and when) which are actually special kinds of adjectives.
Writing: This week, and during the rest of the year we will be learning how to research a topic (biomes), take notes, and putting the most important ideas (main idea and details) into a paragraph. We will also look for proper use of new vocabulary and specific wording to help the reader understand what was learned.
Math: During the beginning of the week we will be reviewing our adding and subtracting. It is important for students to have at least one (if not more than one) strategy to accurately add and subtract 2 digit numbers (with and without regrouping). On Wednesday and Thursday we will be doing our last “check in” of the year. PLEASE have your child do this work INDEPENDENTLY. If they need more help with any of the skills, we still have time to work on building them up.
Science/Social Studies: As we study biomes, we are really learning about science (plants/animals/adaptations), as well as social studies (geography). We will also be integrating our reading, writing, as well as math at times. We want students to build an awareness that the world has many different places with different kinds of animals and plant life.

Week 7: April 27 - May 1 ***Note No School On Friday.****
What Should My Child be Learning this Week?
Reading: This week (Unit 6 Week 1) we will have the opportunity to read some myths that helped people understand about plants. It will fit nicely into our study of plants and plant adaptations
Phonics: We are focusing on the open and closed syllables (open syllables end with a vowel sound and the vowel is usually long, closed syllables end with a consonant sound and the vowel sound is usually short.)
Grammar: We are learning about adjectives, words that describe nouns.
Writing: Responding to reading, using details from the story, complete sentences, proper punctuation and correct spelling of high frequency words and words written in the story. We will also be starting some informational writing about our science, being sure to use good vocabulary, and specific language. (Our first run at describing plants was a little tough, we will try again this week, I am hoping your child read my notes and can improve this week. A big one was describing things other than the plant (describing the pot it was in).
Math: (Lessons 7-8 & 7-9 and subtraction) During the beginning of the week we will be graphing some measurements. At the end of the week we will be introducing ways to subtract. We will focus on using base ten blocks (which you can access on ConnectEd/Everyday Math) and open number lines. Please avoid teaching the algorithms quite yet. I promise we will get to them before the end of the year.
Science/Social Studies: We want students to explore, practice learning new things and observe the world around them. Have some fun with this! This week they will learn about how plants disperse their seeds. In social studies we are starting to look at landforms, which will then lead to a study of biomes
The optional assignments and should be done based on needed practice.
All activities are posted on Seesaw. You may print also print them from here and download them to Seesaw.

What Should My Child be Learning this Week?
Reading: This week (Unit 5 Week 5) the readings we do will be around “Why are rules important?”. We will continue to practice making predictions and taking notice of causes and effects in the stories we read.
Phonics: We are focusing on the Short vowel digraphs: short e spelled ea, short u spelled ou, and short i spelled with a y.
Grammar: We are learning about noun verb agreement, for the most part students can hear whether or not nouns and verbs agree. For example, it doesn’t sound right to say, “I walks to the store” which means the noun and verb don’t agree. However, we want students to listen carefully and start to grasp why they don’t agree.
Math: (Lessons 7-3 – 7-6) This beginning of the week, we will be doing some more practice adding numbers by building groups/multiples of 10 and adding the rest. This is a great strategy, especially when you need to add more than two numbers. The end of the week we will be practicing measuring length using both US Customary Units (yards/feet/inches) as well as Metric Units (meters/centimeters). *Please keep US Customary and Metric separate, it is a confusion that does not need to happen. Some students are ready to measure to the nearest half inch and we will give them an opportunity to do that. ****Please let me know if you do not have a ruler at home. I will try to get one to you.***
Science/Social Studies: We want students to explore, practice learning new things and observe the world around them. Have some fun with this! This week they will learn about how plants survive. In social studies we are continuing our study of maps, focusing on our oceans and continents.

Do this Worksheet or the Seesaw Activity
These assignments are due by Friday, but we appreciate them being posted as soon as they are complete.
Remember: We are asking students to only put in 1 to 2 hours of work into their reading, writing and math each day and a half hour each week for each of the other subject areas: science, social studies, art, music and gym.
Week 4
What Should My Child be Learning this Week?
Reading: We are continuing to summarize stories your child is reading and this week we will practice using sequence words (first, next, then, last, finally, etc.) to help with the summary.
Phonics: Variant Vowels (vowels sounds in words like room, crook)
Grammar: We are introducing possessive pronouns (his, her, our, their, my, its, your) *Notice possessive pronouns do not have apostrophes.
Writing: Responding to reading, using details from the story, complete sentences, proper punctuation and correct spelling of high frequency words and words written in the story.
Math: This week we will be introducing students to the traditional algorithm (way) to add, and start to explore ways they can think about subtracting. We are hoping by the end of the week students will have found a way to efficiently add 2 two-digit numbers (ex. 27 + 48). If you feel your child needs more support please let me know so that we can schedule a phone call and I can provide extra practice.
Science/Social Studies: We want students to explore, practice learning new things and observe the world around them. Have some fun with this! This week they will learn some ways plants spread their seeds in science. In social studies we are continuing our study of maps.
This week, I would like your child to do the following assignments independently and post them to Seesaw so that I may monitor his/her skills. Please post a picture/PDF/Word Document of:
