10.20.19 Our big focus in Math these weeks have been to build strategies to quickly add. If your child is not yet solid with his/her doubles facts (1 + 1, 2 + 2, 3 + 3…..9 + 9) and combinations of 10 (0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7 ……10 + 0), please focus on those facts for homework. We use them as a base to many of our strategies. For example: to solve 5 + 6 students can think 5 + 5 (which is both a double fact and a combination of 10) and one more is 11, or to solve 6 + 8 students can think 6 + 6 and 2 more, or 6 + 4 and 4 more, or take one from the 8 and give it to the 6 making 7 + 7 which all equal 14. If you cannot follow these examples, please shoot me an email so that I can make it clearer for you. These strategies will help your child solve facts more automatically, leaving more working memory to solve more complex math problems.
In science we are looking at the power of water and how it is able to change our earth. We will be conducting an experiment on Wednesday afternoon if anyone would like to/is able to come in and help out let me know.
