Dr. Stearns' Morning Message
Good morning, 2nd grade families! We hope that you have all had a great weekend! Thank you again for your patience, feedback, and collaboration this past week. We could not be more grateful for you! Many parents have been asking for the next day's assignments ahead of time. Last week, we wanted to provide you with information in a systematic, and consistent format. However, we realize that as a family, you are going to need to find ways to deliver instruction, support and guidance, all while continuing to work, run a home, and maintain quality family time. Therefore, we wanted to provide you with a document that would allow you flexibility with the "school" portion of your day. We are going to provide you with three documents today in the “Remote Learning Resources” tab in a folder called “Reference”.
Finally, we need to keep an attendance record of your Second Grader's participation in remote learning, each day. We are asking that you indicate this, in one of two ways. 1. You can print off a copy of the Remote Learning Calendar, and simply make check marks, or highlight the items that have been completed, and photograph or scan the document, or, 2. You can complete the PDF that we will attach later this morning. This is an interactive document, so it can be completed digitally, or you are welcome to print it off. Please submit one of these forms, by Friday. We have left a space for "parent feedback". In this space, please indicate any observations that you have about your second grader's progress or work completion. This will help to guide instruction for the next week. Please be sure to check our Week 2 PDF/Worksheets page, Reference page (after 9:00) Videos page (after 10:00), "Just For Fun" page (after 11:00), and "Pictures" (after noon time today) page! If there is nothing there yet give it a little time and it will be there...still working on building it. Thanks for your patience. Assignments for 3/19 and 3/20
Reading: Our goal is for you to take a Reading Counts quiz so that we are sure that you are able to navigate this program. It is a quick way for us teachers to keep track of what you are reading and how well you understand what you are reading. If books seem to be too easy or too difficult, we can recommend books that will be just right for you. This week: Work to finish a book and take at least one Reading Counts quiz (although if you are taking too many reading counts quizzes the books may be too easy for you. ;)) For at least one of the days, choose one or more of the “Response Questions” listed under Remote Learning Resources (this will be in PDF/link format titled Response Questions). Write a 3-5 sentence written response on a piece of paper. Please use complete sentences with capitalization and punctuation. Email your work to your teacher when completed. English/Language Arts: Our goal is for you to become familiar with and practice reading and writing contractions. This week: We have attached two PDF practice pages. We do not need these pages returned to us. This is just for some at-home practice. We are hoping that these can be completed with someone at home, to monitor for mistakes. Feel free to print them out for practice, but your second grader can write their answers on a separate piece of paper, or complete them orally, as well. Math: Our goal this week is to be sure you can use the Everyday Math Program to be most helpful to you. We are also going to do a little bit more work with data collection and graphing. This week: Reread Reference Book pages 113 - 116 online (be sure to do the geometer’s sketchbook activities, especially if you did not get a chance to do them at school). Look for data you can collect (number of pockets your family has today, types of toys you have, if you have fruit loops, M & Ms or another colorful food, rolling dice). Make a tally chart and graph. You can use your own paper, or I have posted worksheets on the PDF/Worksheet page. Brain Break - The goal is not to forget the importance of movement every day! This week: Go Noodle - ZAP IT! ZAPI IT! - https://family.gonoodle.com/activities/zap-it Go Noodle - Indoor Recess - It’s Raining Cats & Dogs - https://family.gonoodle.com/activities/its-raining-cats-n-dogs Bonus Ideas: There are so many great “Remote Learning Activities” being shared on Facebook such as author’s sharing their stories and teaching students to draw, virtual field trips, etc. If you would like to work on those, I would love to hear about it if you try. (You can also google “remote learning activities and get similar results.
3/18/20 - Assignment
Read - Find a great book, and read for at least 20 minutes! If you finish, make sure you login to Reading Counts (in the Library Learning Commons) to take a quiz. (Many of our students have not had experience with this, but it is pretty self-explanatory, don't hesitate to email if you need help) English/Language Arts - Grammar - Contractions - Log onto NBCS, Learning Library Commons. Click on Brain Pop Jr. (passwords have all been placed under the Approved Websites/Logins Tab) Enter “Contractions” into search bar Watch 5 minute Video on Contractions Take 5 Questions Quiz at the end. We have attached a PDF of a practice page above. We do not need this page returned to us. This is just for some at-home practice. We are hoping that this can be completed with someone at home, to monitor for mistakes. Feel free to print it out for practice, but your second grader can write their answers on a separate piece of paper, or complete them orally, as well. Brain Break - Go Noodle - Milk Shake - https://family.gonoodle.com/activities/milkshake Go Noodle is a great web-based resource that helps get your body moving. Check out the attached PDF for more information on how to use it. Today, we recommend clicking on the above link, for a fun way to get the kiddos moving. (We've Go Noodle in class, but not this particular dance.) Math - Today in math, you are going to visit Everyday Math online again, to explore another part of the online program. This part of the program is called the e toolkit. Please click on the video below to get an overview of the tools, and a few suggestions on how to use them. https://youtu.be/xQpSGLpfiVs Once you have logged into Everyday Math Online, you are going to click on the e toolkit. Once there, we would like you to spend a little time exploring the different resources that are available. Have fun! Create a picture with pattern blocks, or practice skip counting on a 100 grid. Once you have explored the e toolkit, you are going to choose either a time math deck, or a money math deck. We want you to flip over each card, and either read the time, or add up the coins on the card, and either say the time, or the sum of the coins on the card. When you finish, let your classroom teacher know what your favorite tool or background was, from when you did some exploring. Dear Parents,
Welcome to day 3 of our remote learning. I am really hoping my daily notes to you will be shorter soon as we all develop our routines. First, thank you all so much for the emails. As you have probably noticed, I have been responding to your child and not you, although I know you read them as well. As I’m sure you already are, please share these emails with your child. I will often ask questions in the email and many of you have had your child answer them. Thank you…it really gives me a feeling of connection to them. Long story short, however, I don’t want the questions to add to the stress of getting school work done, which means responding to my response is NOT required. However, responding to my response fosters a feeling of connection between your child and me, so if it is possible for them to respond I would appreciate it. Today I added a page called “Approved Websites/Logins” under the “Remote Learning Resources” (remember, just hover over the “tab” and you will get a drop-down menu). Most of our students have not had a lot of experience with a lot of the websites listed. Therefore, if they/you need help do not hesitate to email me and I can give you a call. As you have noticed, each day we are adding a little bit more to our assignments. I think we will be topping out tomorrow, with an addition of an assignment “bingo sheet”, from which students can choose one assignment every day or every other day. I have found it most helpful when parents send 1 email a day with your child’s name and today’s date in the subject line (rather than replying to this email) and their work attached. Having 1 email chain per day per child helps me be sure I have responded to everyone and to keep track of the conversations. Last but not least, please feel free to email with feedback. Are we giving too much work, not enough work, the work is too hard or too easy? We teachers are new at this as well, but truly want to be as helpful as possible. Thank you all for your flexibility and supporting your children. |
